How Discount Calculations Actually Work
Discounts look simple on the surface, take a price, subtract a percentage, done. But between figuring out what you'll actually pay, reverse-engineering an original price from a sale tag, and understanding what happens when two discounts get applied one after another, there's more to it than most people expect. Finding the Sale Price
This is the calculation you use before checkout, when you know the original price and the discount percentage, and want to know what you'll actually pay.
Example: A jacket priced at 2,000 with a 25% discount: 2,000 × (1 − 25 ÷ 100) = 2,000 × 0.75 = 1,500. You pay 1,500 and save 500.
Finding the Discount Percentage
Sometimes you know what something originally cost and what you actually paid, but want to know the discount rate itself, useful for comparing deals or verifying a receipt.
Example: An item originally priced at 2,000 sold for 1,500. Discount: ((2,000 − 1,500) ÷ 2,000) × 100 = 25%. That's a 25% discount.
Finding the Original Price
If you only know the sale price and the discount percentage, working backward to the original price requires dividing, not adding the percentage back onto the sale price directly.
Example: An item sells for 1,500 after a 25% discount. Original price: 1,500 ÷ (1 − 25 ÷ 100) = 1,500 ÷ 0.75 = 2,000.
A common mistake here is adding 25% of 1,500 back onto 1,500, which gives 1,875, the wrong answer. The 25% was calculated against the larger, original price, not the smaller sale price, so dividing is the correct method.
Stacked Discounts: Why They Don't Simply Add Up
This is where most shoppers get tripped up. When a store advertises "20% off, plus an extra 10% off," it's tempting to assume that's a combined 30% discount. It isn't. Each discount is applied one after another, and the second discount is calculated on the already-reduced price, not the original one.
Example: A 2,000 item with 20% off, then an extra 10% off. First discount: 2,000 × 0.80 = 1,600. Second discount applied to that: 1,600 × 0.90 = 1,440. The final price is 1,440, not the 1,400 you'd get from a flat 30% off (2,000 × 0.70 = 1,400).
In this example, "20% off plus 10% off" actually works out to a combined 28% discount, not 30%. The gap between stacked and combined discounts grows larger as the individual percentages increase, so it's always worth calculating the real final price rather than mentally adding the two numbers together.
Why This Matters When Shopping
Retailers often advertise stacked discounts because the combined percentage sounds bigger than it actually is, and because it's genuinely harder for shoppers to calculate in their head. Knowing the real formula means you can compare two different stacked-discount offers accurately, like "25% off" versus "15% off plus an extra 15% off," which are not the same deal even though the numbers look similar at first glance (25% off 2,000 is 1,500, while 15% off then another 15% off is 2,000 × 0.85 × 0.85 = 1,445, actually a better deal).
