What Is a Ratio?

Simplifying a Ratio
Simplifying a ratio means reducing it to the smallest whole numbers that keep the same proportion, similar to reducing a fraction. This is done by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD), the largest number that divides evenly into both.
Example: Simplify 24:36. The GCD of 24 and 36 is 12. Dividing both by 12: 24 ÷ 12 = 2, 36 ÷ 12 = 3. The simplified ratio is 2:3.
A simplified ratio is easier to read and compare, and it represents the exact same proportional relationship as the original, unsimplified numbers.
Finding a Missing Value in an Equivalent Ratio
Two ratios are equivalent if they represent the same proportion, even with different numbers, like 2:5 and 8:20. If you know three of the four numbers in a proportion (A:B = C:D), you can solve for the fourth using cross-multiplication.
Example: Solve 2:5 = 8:?. D = (5 × 8) ÷ 2 = 40 ÷ 2 = 20. So 2:5 = 8:20.
This calculation is used constantly in scaling recipes, resizing images while keeping proportions, converting map distances to real-world distances, and adjusting formulas or mixtures while keeping their ratio consistent.
Dividing a Quantity According to a Ratio
This answers a very practical question: if you have a total amount and need to split it according to a ratio, how much does each share actually get? This comes up in splitting profits between business partners, dividing an inheritance, allocating a budget across departments, or mixing ingredients in a specific proportion.
Example: Split 4,500 in a 2:3 ratio. Sum of parts: 2 + 3 = 5. First share: (2 ÷ 5) × 4,500 = 1,800. Second share: (3 ÷ 5) × 4,500 = 2,700. Check: 1,800 + 2,700 = 4,500, which matches the total.
This same method extends to three or more parts. Splitting 4,500 in a 2:3:4 ratio, for example, uses a sum of 9 parts instead of 5, with each share calculated the same way against that total.
