Percentage Decrease Explained

Percentage decrease measures how much a value has dropped relative to where it started. It's a calculation used constantly in retail discounts, salary cuts, weight loss tracking, depreciation, and any scenario where something is shrinking rather than growing. Like percentage increase, it expresses change relative to the original number, which is what makes it meaningful for comparison. A $20 price cut means something very different on a $40 item than it does on a $2,000 item, and percentage decrease is what captures that properly.

The Percentage Decrease Formula

To find how much a number has decreased in percentage terms, subtract the new value from the original value, divide that difference by the original value, then multiply by 100.

% Decrease = ((Original Value − New Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

Example: A product priced at $100 is now selling for $80. The decrease: ((100 − 80) ÷ 100) × 100 = 20%. The price dropped by 20%.

If the result comes out negative, that actually means the value went up rather than down, and you're looking at a percentage increase instead of a decrease.

Finding the New Value After a Percentage Decrease

Sometimes you know the original number and the percentage it's going to drop by, and you need the resulting value. This comes up with discounts, pay cuts, and depreciation estimates.

New Value = Original Value × (1 − Percentage ÷ 100)

Example: A $250 item goes on sale with a 12% discount. New value: 250 × (1 − 12 ÷ 100) = 250 × 0.88 = $220.

The same approach applies to multi-step depreciation, like estimating a car's value after several years of decline, though each year's decrease needs to be applied separately since the percentages compound rather than simply add up.

Working Backward: Finding the Original Value

This is the step people get wrong most often. If you know the final value after a decrease and the percentage it dropped by, you can't add that percentage back onto the new value to get the original, because the percentage was calculated against the original number, not the smaller, discounted one.

Original Value = New Value ÷ (1 − Percentage ÷ 100)

Example: A jacket now costs $264 after a 12% discount. To find the original price: 264 ÷ (1 − 12 ÷ 100) = 264 ÷ 0.88 = $300. The jacket originally cost $300, not $264 plus 12% of $264.

This distinction matters in retail pricing especially. Adding 12% back onto $264 gives $295.68, which is the wrong original price. The correct method divides by 0.88 rather than adding a percentage onto the discounted figure, because the 12% was applied against the larger, original price in the first place.

Retailers rely on percentage decrease for every sale, clearance, and promotional discount. In finance, it tracks stock price drops, portfolio losses, and currency depreciation. A Common Point of Confusion

People often assume that a percentage decrease can simply be reversed by applying the same percentage as an increase. It can't. A price that drops 20% and then rises 20% doesn't return to the original value, because the 20% increase is calculated on the smaller, already-discounted price, not the original one. For example, $100 dropped by 20% becomes $80, but $80 increased by 20% is only $96, not back to $100. Keeping track of which number a percentage applies to is the key to getting these calculations right every time.
