Percentage difference and percentage error sound alike and get mixed up constantly, but they answer two different questions and use two different formulas. Both measure how far apart two numbers are, but the key distinction comes down to whether either number is considered the "correct" or "true" value. Getting this wrong doesn't just produce a slightly off number, it can produce a meaningfully different result, especially when the two values are far apart.

What Is Percentage Difference?

Notice that percentage difference is always positive and symmetric, swapping A and B gives you the same result, since there's no directionality involved.

What Is Percentage Error?

Percentage error is used when one of the two numbers is a known, correct value, often called the "true" or "actual" value, and the other is a measurement, estimate, or approximation of it. This shows up constantly in science, engineering, and quality control, where you're checking how close a measured result came to the known correct answer.

Example: A thermometer reads 48°C, but the actual, verified temperature is 50°C. The error: (|48 − 50| ÷ 50) × 100 = 4%. The thermometer's reading is off by 4% from the true value.

Unlike percentage difference, percentage error always divides by the actual/true value specifically, not an average. This makes it directional in the sense that the "actual" value has a fixed, defined role in the formula, even though the standard version still uses absolute value so the result stays positive.

Why the Distinction Actually Matters

Take the thermometer example again: if you mistakenly treated it as a percentage difference instead of a percentage error, you'd divide by the average of 48 and 50 (which is 49) instead of just 50, giving you 4.08% instead of the correct 4%.
