Example: Solve 3/4 = 9/X. X = (4 × 9) ÷ 3 = 36 ÷ 3 = 12. So 3/4 = 9/12, and both fractions simplify to the same value (0.75).

Checking Whether Two Ratios Are Actually Proportional

Counter-example: Are 4/6 and 10/16 proportional? Cross-multiply: 4 × 16 = 64, and 6 × 10 = 60. These don't match, so the ratios are not proportional, even though the numbers look superficially similar.
Direct Proportion and Scaling Real-World Problems
Direct proportion describes situations where two quantities increase or decrease together at a constant rate, if one doubles, so does the other. This is the math behind scaling a recipe, converting currency at a fixed exchange rate, calculating distance from speed and time, or figuring out material needs for a bigger project.
Example: A recipe using 2 cups of flour makes 12 cookies. How much flour is needed for 30 cookies? New flour = (30 × 2) ÷ 12 = 60 ÷ 12 = 5 cups.

A Note on Inverse Proportion
Not every relationship is direct. In an inverse proportion, one quantity increases while the other decreases, like speed and travel time for a fixed distance, doubling your speed halves your travel time.
